UGT1A4 Variants

Meaning

UGT1A4 variants refer to the common genetic polymorphisms, or distinct sequence variations, found within the gene that codes for the enzyme Uridine 5′-diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase 1A4. This enzyme is a key player in the Phase II hepatic detoxification pathway, specifically responsible for the glucuronidation and subsequent clearance of certain endogenous hormones, most notably estrogen and progesterone metabolites. These variants can significantly alter the enzyme’s activity, thereby influencing the circulating half-life and effective systemic exposure of these critical sex steroids.
