UGT Glucuronidation

Meaning

UGT Glucuronidation is a critical Phase II detoxification pathway catalyzed by a family of enzymes known as Uridine 5′-diphospho-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs), primarily located in the liver. This metabolic process involves conjugating a molecule of glucuronic acid onto various endogenous and exogenous lipophilic compounds, including steroid hormones, to increase their water solubility. The resulting glucuronide conjugate is then readily excreted from the body via bile or urine, effectively clearing spent hormones and toxins.
