Ubiquitination

Meaning

Ubiquitination is a fundamental, post-translational modification process where the small, highly conserved regulatory protein ubiquitin is covalently attached to a target protein substrate. This modification is a critical mechanism for controlling nearly all aspects of cellular life, fundamentally altering the target protein’s function, cellular location, interaction partners, or stability. It is a dynamic and reversible process essential for cellular homeostasis.
