Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-α)

Meaning

Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) is a potent, pleiotropic pro-inflammatory cytokine primarily secreted by activated macrophages and other immune cells, playing a central role in systemic inflammation and immune regulation. While essential for host defense against pathogens and early tumor surveillance, chronic overproduction of TNF-α is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of various chronic diseases, including autoimmune conditions, insulin resistance, and endocrine dysfunction. Its systemic presence acts as a major mediator of catabolism and cellular stress.
