TSH Suppression

Meaning

TSH suppression is a clinical endpoint in thyroid management, characterized by intentionally lowering the serum concentration of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) below the normal reference range, often to undetectable levels. This strategy is primarily employed in the post-treatment surveillance of differentiated thyroid cancer to reduce the risk of recurrence by eliminating the trophic stimulus of TSH on residual malignant thyroid cells. It is also a consequence of overtreatment with levothyroxine in hypothyroidism, a state that requires immediate dose adjustment to mitigate risks like atrial fibrillation and bone density loss.
