Meaning

Tryptophan steal, also known as kynurenine pathway activation, is a metabolic diversion where the essential amino acid L-Tryptophan is shunted away from the synthesis of beneficial neurotransmitters, specifically serotonin and melatonin, toward the production of kynurenine and its metabolites. This metabolic “steal” is predominantly triggered by chronic immune activation and inflammation, which potently upregulates the enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). Clinically, this process can lead to reduced serotonin availability in the brain, contributing to symptoms of depression, anxiety, and sleep dysregulation.
