Tryptophan Hydroxylase

Meaning

Tryptophan Hydroxylase (TPH) is an essential enzyme that catalyzes the initial and rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of the crucial monoamine neurotransmitter, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine). This enzyme is a nonheme iron-dependent monooxygenase that exists in two main isoforms, TPH1 and TPH2, which are expressed in distinct tissues. TPH activity is a key determinant of the overall rate of serotonin production, thereby influencing mood, sleep, appetite, and gastrointestinal function.
