Trimethylamine N-Oxide

Meaning

Trimethylamine N-Oxide, commonly abbreviated as TMAO, is a small organic compound derived from the metabolism of certain dietary nutrients by gut microbiota. This metabolite is formed when bacteria in the intestines process compounds like choline, L-carnitine, and phosphatidylcholine, which are abundant in red meat, eggs, and some dairy products, subsequently undergoing enzymatic oxidation in the liver.
