Treg/Th17 Balance

Meaning

The Treg/Th17 balance refers to the dynamic equilibrium between two distinct subsets of T helper lymphocytes: regulatory T cells (Tregs) and T helper 17 cells (Th17s). Tregs primarily function to suppress immune responses and maintain self-tolerance, preventing autoimmunity, while Th17 cells are pro-inflammatory, crucial for host defense against extracellular pathogens but also implicated in autoimmune conditions. This crucial immunological ratio dictates the overall immune system’s propensity towards either immune suppression or active inflammation, profoundly influencing physiological stability.
