Transferrin Transport Efficiency

Meaning

Transferrin transport efficiency refers to the effectiveness with which the protein transferrin, the primary iron carrier in the bloodstream, is able to bind and deliver iron to tissues requiring it for metabolic functions. This efficiency is clinically assessed by measuring transferrin saturation (TSAT), which indicates the percentage of transferrin’s iron-binding sites currently occupied. High efficiency is crucial for maximizing oxygen delivery and supporting mitochondrial ATP energy generation throughout the body.
