Transferrin Saturation Brain Fog

Meaning

The neurocognitive symptom complex, often described as “brain fog,” characterized by impaired concentration, mental sluggishness, and difficulty with executive function, which is clinically correlated with abnormal levels of transferrin saturation. Transferrin saturation is a measure of the percentage of transferrin, the primary iron transport protein, that is bound to iron. Both excessively high and low saturation levels can disrupt brain iron homeostasis, leading to compromised neuronal function and subsequent cognitive complaints.
