Transepidermal Water Loss

Meaning

The passive, measurable diffusion and evaporation of water from the underlying dermal tissues through the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis, into the surrounding atmosphere. This continuous physiological process is a key indicator of the functional integrity of the skin’s barrier function. Elevated Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is clinically associated with impaired barrier function, skin dehydration, and increased susceptibility to environmental irritants and allergens.
