Transdermal Absorption

Meaning

Transdermal absorption is the physiological process by which a therapeutic agent, such as a steroid hormone, passes through the stratum corneum and underlying layers of the skin to enter the systemic circulation. This non-invasive delivery route is a clinically preferred method for certain hormone replacement therapies, offering the advantage of avoiding hepatic first-pass metabolism and providing stable, sustained circulating hormone levels. The efficiency of this process is governed by the physicochemical properties of the compound and the integrity of the skin barrier.
