Transcriptional Co-Activators

Meaning

Transcriptional co-activators are a diverse class of nuclear proteins that enhance the rate of gene transcription by interacting with sequence-specific transcription factors, such as nuclear hormone receptors, without directly binding to the DNA themselves. These essential regulatory proteins function as molecular bridges, linking the hormone-receptor complex to the general transcription machinery, thereby facilitating chromatin remodeling and the initiation of messenger RNA synthesis. They are indispensable for the final biological action of steroid and thyroid hormones.
