Trabecular Structure

Meaning

Trabecular structure refers to the intricate, spongy, lattice-like network of interconnected bony plates and rods, known as trabeculae, found within the interior of bones, particularly at the ends of long bones and in the vertebrae. This architecture provides mechanical strength and resilience while minimizing bone weight, and it is metabolically highly active. The health and density of the trabecular structure are primary indicators of bone quality and are profoundly sensitive to long-term hormonal status, especially estrogen and parathyroid hormone levels.
