Toxicokinetics

Meaning

Toxicokinetics is the scientific discipline that quantitatively studies the fate of a toxic substance, or xenobiotic, within a living organism from the point of exposure to its elimination. This field applies the principles of pharmacokinetics to toxic agents, describing the rates and extent of four key processes: absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME). Understanding toxicokinetics is crucial for establishing the relationship between an external exposure level and the internal dose delivered to target organs.
