Total T4

Meaning

Total T4, or total thyroxine, is a common clinical measurement representing the sum concentration of both the protein-bound and the free (unbound) thyroxine hormone circulating in the bloodstream. Thyroxine is the primary hormone secreted by the thyroid gland, and it is crucial for regulating the body’s basal metabolic rate, protein synthesis, and sensitivity to other hormones. While it provides an overall measure of thyroid production, Total T4 alone may not accurately reflect the biologically active thyroid status due to the influence of transport proteins.
