Total Cholesterol

Meaning

Total Cholesterol represents the sum of all cholesterol-containing lipoproteins circulating in the blood plasma, including Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), and Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) components. While a general marker of lipid status, its interpretation in hormonal health requires context, as sex hormones significantly influence the balance between these fractions. Elevated levels, particularly atherogenic particles, are a recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is often modulated by endocrine balance.
