Tissue Microenvironment

Meaning

The Tissue Microenvironment refers to the complex, dynamic cellular and non-cellular milieu immediately surrounding the cells within a specific organ or tissue. This environment includes the extracellular matrix, interstitial fluid, local growth factors, cytokines, and neighboring cells like immune and stromal cells. The health and integrity of this microenvironment are paramount, as they dictate cellular behavior, function, and response to hormonal signals. Dysfunction here is often a precursor to systemic disease.
