Time under Tension Metrics

Meaning

Time under Tension (TUT) Metrics are quantitative measures of the duration for which a muscle or muscle group is subjected to a mechanical load during a set of resistance exercise. This metric specifically quantifies the concentric, eccentric, and isometric phases of a lift, serving as a critical variable in resistance training programming for targeted physiological adaptation. Manipulating TUT is a primary strategy used to dictate the specific type of adaptive stimulus, whether it be geared toward myofibrillar hypertrophy, sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, or endurance.
