Tight Junction Proteins

Meaning

A complex of specialized transmembrane and scaffolding proteins, including occludin, claudins, and zonula occludens (ZO) proteins, that form a multi-protein junctional complex sealing the space between adjacent epithelial and endothelial cells. These proteins are the molecular components of the tight junctions, which establish a selective barrier that controls the paracellular transport of ions, water, and solutes. The integrity of these junctions is crucial for maintaining the barrier function of the gut, blood-brain barrier, and renal tubules.
