Thyroxine-Binding Globulin

Meaning

Thyroxine-Binding Globulin (TBG) is the principal serum transport protein, synthesized primarily in the liver, that binds and carries the majority of the thyroid hormones, T4 and T3, throughout the systemic circulation. TBG plays a critical physiological role by regulating the precise availability of the free, biologically active thyroid hormone to all target tissues. Changes in the circulating concentration of this globulin, often significantly influenced by sex hormones, directly impact the clinical interpretation of total thyroid hormone levels.
