Thyroxine

Meaning

Thyroxine, also known as T4, is the principal hormone secreted by the thyroid gland, characterized by its four iodine atoms. It functions primarily as a prohormone, possessing limited biological activity until its conversion in peripheral tissues into the more potent triiodothyronine, or T3. This essential conversion process is fundamental for the hormone to exert its widespread physiological effects throughout the body.
