Thyroperoxidase (TPO)

Meaning

Thyroperoxidase, often abbreviated as TPO, is a pivotal enzyme synthesized within the thyroid follicular cells, responsible for catalyzing key steps in the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones. This glycoprotein facilitates both the oxidation of iodide and the organification of iodine into tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, along with the subsequent coupling of iodotyrosine molecules to form T3 and T4.
