Thyroid Transporters

Meaning

Thyroid transporters are a family of specialized membrane proteins responsible for the active movement of thyroid hormones, specifically thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), across cell membranes. These transporters are essential for regulating the availability of thyroid hormone within target tissues, as the lipophilic hormones cannot simply diffuse across the lipid bilayer at sufficient rates. The efficiency of these transporters is a key determinant of tissue-specific thyroid hormone action.
