Thyroid Transport Proteins

Meaning

Thyroid transport proteins are specialized plasma proteins, primarily synthesized by the liver, that bind and circulate the lipophilic thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), throughout the bloodstream. The three main proteins are Thyroxine-Binding Globulin (TBG), transthyretin, and albumin. These proteins are crucial for maintaining a stable reservoir of thyroid hormone, regulating its delivery to peripheral tissues, and protecting it from rapid metabolic clearance.
