Thyroid Suppression

Meaning

Thyroid Suppression is a clinical state characterized by the intentional or unintentional reduction of the thyroid gland’s production and secretion of its hormones, primarily triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Clinically, this is often evidenced by a low or undetectable level of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), as the pituitary gland reduces its command signal in response to high circulating thyroid hormone levels. Unintentional suppression can be a sign of excessive exogenous hormone administration or certain autoimmune conditions.
