Thyroid Resistance

Meaning

Thyroid Resistance, also formally known as Resistance to Thyroid Hormone (RTH), is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by a reduced responsiveness of target tissues to the circulating thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This condition typically results in elevated levels of both thyroid hormones and Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH), as the pituitary gland attempts to overcome the cellular resistance. Clinically, patients may present with a mix of hypothyroid and euthyroid symptoms due to varying degrees of tissue-specific resistance. This diagnosis requires careful differentiation from common forms of hypothyroidism and is essential for appropriate therapeutic management.
