Thyroid Over-Treatment

Meaning

Thyroid over-treatment is a common clinical scenario where a patient receiving thyroid hormone replacement therapy, typically for hypothyroidism, is administered a dose that results in supraphysiological levels of circulating thyroid hormones. This condition is biochemically characterized by a suppressed or undetectable thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level and often elevated free T4 or T3. Chronic over-treatment carries significant health risks, particularly to the cardiovascular and skeletal systems.
