Thyroid Metabolism

Meaning

Thyroid Metabolism refers to the entire cascade of physiological processes involved in the synthesis, secretion, transport, peripheral conversion, and ultimate action of the thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones, secreted by the thyroid gland, are fundamental regulators of the body’s basal metabolic rate, influencing oxygen consumption, heat production, and the function of virtually every organ system. Disruptions in thyroid metabolism, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, lead to widespread systemic effects on energy balance, cardiovascular function, and neurocognitive health.
