Thyroid Hormones and Hair

Meaning

Thyroid Hormones and Hair describes the direct and indirect influence of circulating thyroid hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), on the hair growth cycle and follicle health. Both hypo- and hyperthyroidism can disrupt the normal anagen (growth) phase, often leading to telogen effluvium, a diffuse form of hair shedding. The hair follicle is a metabolically active tissue, highly responsive to the systemic metabolic rate regulated by the thyroid. Maintaining euthyroid status is crucial for restoring hair density and texture, highlighting a visible clinical marker of endocrine balance.
