Thyroid Hormone T3 Conversion

Meaning

Thyroid Hormone T3 Conversion is the critical metabolic process where the relatively inactive prohormone thyroxine (T4), which is secreted by the thyroid gland, is transformed into the highly potent and biologically active triiodothyronine (T3). This essential conversion occurs primarily in peripheral tissues, including the liver, kidney, and muscle, and is absolutely necessary for regulating the basal metabolic rate, body temperature, and the functional integrity of nearly all organ systems. Impairment in this conversion pathway can lead to clinical symptoms of hypothyroidism despite normal circulating T4 levels.
