Thyroid Hormone Production

Meaning

The intricate biochemical and cellular process, localized within the follicular cells of the thyroid gland, responsible for the synthesis and storage of the amino acid-derived hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This process requires the active uptake of iodine and its incorporation into the glycoprotein thyroglobulin, ultimately resulting in the formation of the metabolically active compounds. Adequate thyroid hormone production is essential for regulating basal metabolic rate, protein synthesis, and sensitivity to other hormones.
