Thyroid Hormone Interactions

Meaning

The complex and reciprocal relationships between thyroid hormones and other major endocrine systems, as well as the effects of various drugs and nutrients on thyroid hormone synthesis, transport, and metabolism. These interactions are clinically significant because the efficacy of thyroid replacement therapy can be profoundly altered by co-administered medications, such as estrogen, or by nutritional deficiencies, necessitating careful clinical management and dose adjustment. Thyroid function is intrinsically linked to cortisol, insulin, and sex steroid homeostasis.
