Thyroid Hormone Control

Meaning

Thyroid Hormone Control refers to the complex, homeostatic regulation of the synthesis, secretion, peripheral conversion, and tissue action of thyroid hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This system is governed by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis and is essential for maintaining basal metabolic rate, body temperature, and the function of virtually every organ system. Optimal control ensures a precise balance of circulating free T3 and T4, adequate conversion of T4 to the active T3 form, and appropriate receptor sensitivity at the cellular level. Dysfunction in this control is a common clinical finding.
