Thyroid Hormone Axis

Meaning

The Thyroid Hormone Axis, formally known as the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid (HPT) axis, is the complex neuroendocrine feedback loop responsible for regulating the synthesis, secretion, and action of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), which are essential for controlling the body’s basal metabolic rate, growth, and development. This axis is a master regulator of energy expenditure and thermogenesis, impacting virtually every cell and organ system in the body. Dysregulation of this axis is a common clinical presentation with wide-ranging systemic effects.
