Thyroid-Gut Axis

Meaning

The Thyroid-Gut Axis is the bidirectional communication pathway and functional relationship between the thyroid gland and the gastrointestinal tract, including the gut microbiome. This axis acknowledges that thyroid hormone is essential for the proper motility, absorption, and integrity of the gut lining, while the gut’s health, particularly the composition of its microbial community, significantly influences thyroid hormone metabolism and immune regulation. Dysfunction in one component often precipitates issues in the other.
