Thyroid Function Suppression

Meaning

Thyroid Function Suppression is the clinical phenomenon where the body’s natural endogenous production and subsequent release of thyroid hormones (T4 and T3) are intentionally or unintentionally reduced, a state typically measured by a decreased serum level of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH). This suppression can be an iatrogenic therapeutic goal in the specialized management of certain thyroid cancers or a pathological consequence of excessive exogenous thyroid hormone intake or primary pituitary dysfunction. The resulting state is one of clinical or subclinical hyperthyroidism at the cellular level.
