Thyroid Function Stress

Meaning

Thyroid Function Stress describes the measurable impact of systemic physiological or psychological stress on the delicate regulatory axis governing thyroid hormone production and metabolism. This is often characterized by a phenomenon known as euthyroid sick syndrome or non-thyroidal illness, where peripheral conversion of the inactive T4 to the active T3 is impaired. Clinically, this can manifest as fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance despite normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, reflecting a protective but suboptimal adaptive response.
