Thyroid Function and Stress

Meaning

Thyroid Function and Stress describes the critical, bidirectional relationship between the body’s production and signaling of thyroid hormones and the physiological response to chronic psychological or physical stress, which is primarily mediated by the adrenal axis. Prolonged stress can significantly impair the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid axis, often resulting in altered peripheral conversion of the inactive T4 hormone to the metabolically active T3 hormone or an increase in Reverse T3. Understanding this dynamic interaction is crucial for diagnosing and treating subtle thyroid dysregulation in a clinical setting.
