Thyroid Dysregulation

Meaning

A state of impaired or aberrant function within the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, resulting in the inappropriate synthesis, secretion, or peripheral action of thyroid hormones, leading to either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. This dysregulation reflects a breakdown in the homeostatic feedback loops that govern thyroid hormone levels, impacting systemic metabolism, energy expenditure, and neurological function. It is a broad term encompassing both primary glandular failure and central control issues.
