Thyroid C-Cell Tumors

Meaning

Thyroid C-Cell Tumors, also known as Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC), are neuroendocrine malignancies arising from the parafollicular C-cells of the thyroid gland. These specialized cells are responsible for the production and secretion of the hormone calcitonin, which regulates calcium homeostasis. MTC can occur sporadically or as part of a hereditary syndrome, such as Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2. Early diagnosis, often through elevated serum calcitonin levels, is critical for therapeutic intervention.
