Thyroid-Binding Globulin

Meaning

Thyroid-Binding Globulin (TBG) is the principal transport protein synthesized by the liver that binds and carries the majority of thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), in the bloodstream. TBG regulates the concentration of the free, biologically active thyroid hormones available to target tissues, as only the unbound fraction can enter cells and exert its metabolic effects. Variations in TBG levels, often influenced by estrogen, pregnancy, or liver function, can significantly impact the interpretation of total thyroid hormone levels.
