Thyroid-Binding Globulin (TBG)

Meaning

Thyroid-Binding Globulin (TBG) is a glycoprotein synthesized primarily by the liver that serves as the main transport protein for circulating thyroid hormones, specifically Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). By binding reversibly to these hormones, TBG regulates their distribution, maintains a stable reservoir, and controls the fraction of free, biologically active hormone available to peripheral tissues. It is a critical component of thyroid hormone homeostasis.
