Thyroid Axis Regulation

Meaning

The tightly controlled homeostatic mechanism involving the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and thyroid gland, collectively known as the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid (HPT) axis, which governs the synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormones. This complex regulatory system ensures that circulating levels of T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) are precisely maintained to regulate the body’s basal metabolic rate, thermogenesis, and cellular differentiation. Clinical evaluation of this axis is fundamental to diagnosing metabolic and endocrine disorders.
