Thyroid Axis Compromise

Meaning

Thyroid Axis Compromise refers to any state of functional impairment or dysregulation within the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid, or HPT, axis, the central neuroendocrine system that governs thyroid hormone production and metabolism. This compromise is a clinical condition that results in abnormal levels of Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone, Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone, or the peripheral thyroid hormones T4 and T3. A compromised axis can manifest as either hypo- or hyperthyroidism, leading to widespread disruption of the body’s metabolic and energy homeostasis.
