Thyroid Autoantibodies

Meaning

Immunoglobulin proteins produced by the body’s own immune system that mistakenly target and attack components of the thyroid gland, leading to chronic inflammation and functional impairment. The most clinically relevant antibodies include Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb) and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb), which are biomarkers for autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. Their presence signifies a loss of immune tolerance to self-antigens within the thyroid endocrine system.
