Thyroid Antibodies

Meaning

Thyroid antibodies are immunoglobulins produced by the body’s immune system that mistakenly target and attack components of the thyroid gland, indicating an underlying autoimmune process. The most common clinically measured types include Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb). The presence of these antibodies is a key diagnostic marker for autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, which profoundly impact overall hormonal balance and systemic metabolism.
