Thyroid-Androgen Axis

Meaning

The Thyroid-Androgen Axis describes the complex, reciprocal relationship and functional interdependence between the thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine T3 and thyroxine T4) and the androgen hormones (primarily testosterone and its metabolites) within the human body. This axis governs critical metabolic and anabolic processes, influencing energy expenditure, body composition, muscle protein synthesis, and sexual function. Dysregulation in one component, such as subclinical hypothyroidism, can significantly impair the function of the other, leading to systemic physiological consequences.
