Thyroid and Fluid Balance

Meaning

Thyroid and Fluid Balance describes the critical homeostatic relationship between thyroid hormones and the body’s regulation of water and electrolyte distribution across the intracellular and extracellular compartments. Thyroid hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), exert a significant influence on renal function, cardiovascular dynamics, and the metabolism of the extracellular matrix. Dysregulation, particularly hypothyroidism, is a common cause of fluid retention and edema, while hyperthyroidism can lead to increased fluid turnover.
